Silverstone Experience
SFS NVELOPE® NV7 system used on new heritage experience at the home of British Motor Racing
Situation
An exciting new heritage experience is opening it's doors at Silverstone, the home of British Motor Racing. Converted from a former World War II hangar, the museum will be home to exhibitions, educational facilities, the British Racing Drivers' Club archive and more. The Experience aims to bring the history of British motorsport to life with state-ofthe- art interactive displays, iconic cars and motorcycles, and an immersive show. The £19.3 million project has been architected by Cube Design, and has received funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
A major challenge arose when main contractor, the Shaylor Group, went into administration just two weeks before the project was due to be completed. Despite the logistical challenges this presented, the project has persevered and will be opening in the coming months.
Solution
To achieve the stunning iridescent exterior, building envelope contractor UEFS Ltd installed PPC aluminium rainscreen panels with Spectra finish. The show-stopping panels were provided by Central Fabrications Midlands Ltd, and fixed back to the main structure using the NVELOPE® NV7 system. The NV7 system was developed for concealed fix cassette applications, and panels are secured using cassette hangers to provide a concealed fixing. The system is made up of T and L profiles, fixed using support brackets, through a series of fixed and flexible points. The flexible point brackets absorb wind loading and allow for expansion and contraction, while the fixed point brackets absorb vertical dead loads.
